London, England, United Kingdom
It is great traveling with women friends.  I am having an absolute blast with 2 of my besties from Troop 21.  The thing about traveling with women is that we laugh.  We laugh ALOT.  And it’s not a little polite chuckle.  It’s the full blown ‘laugh till you can’t breathe and tears squirt out your eyes’.  There have been a couple of occasions when one of us has been in the washroom when the other 2 break into fits of laughter.  The one in the bathroom has had to cut their business short to open the door and ask “What did I miss?”.  Fortunately, unlike in the tv commercial, we’re not at that stage yet where we pee a little when we laugh, or else my pants would have been wet every day so far.
It’s been another great day today as we headed out to the environs of London.  Off we went to Shoreditch.  Why Shoreditch, you ask?  Well, there were a couple of reasons.  I read that it’s one of the new and trendy areas for the artsy crowds.  Plus...there’s a place called the Pizza Pilgrims that can make a chocolate calzone out of your favourite bar.  Pizza and chocolate??  We’re ALL IN!
Being that it was well before lunch when we arrived in Shoreditch, we decided to check out the Old Spitalfields Market which was just around the corner from the tube station.  I’ve been to a few markets during my many trips to London, but I have to say, this one is hands down my favourite.  What a fabulous spot.  We all indulged in a little retail therapy.  And Fay...I hold you responsible for the most expensive purchase I made today...a new scarf.  I’m gonna send you the bill for my 7 step program when I get home!
Our lunch was excellent and our chocolate calzones were decadent...but then, that’s no real surprise now, is it?
Tonight we were off to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock.  We had phenomenal seats and the young people performing were sensational.  I now have an ear worm...(nah nah nah nah nah nah...stick it to the man).  And what a civilized theatre...they let you take photos during the last song.
Tomorrow we head to Alnwick and what can only be a better wifi signal!!
ATTENTION, ATTENTION to the following public service announcement...
I’ve been collecting currency for this trip for the past few months.  I picked up my last bundle just a few weeks ago.  Imagine my surprise when I tried to pass some of the £10 notes that I received at the bank, only to be told they are out of circulation.  Let me tell you this...getting a bank to exchange them for the new issue bills was not easy.  Three banks we went to today and not one would touch them.  Mainly because we didn’t have a bank account.  Duh huh!  We ARE tourists!  Finally, after the third stop, we were referred to the Bank of England.  Luckily we were only a couple of tube stops away from the bank at the time, so didn’t have to go too far out of our way.  And doubly lucky that we got it sorted BEFORE heading north to Alnwick tomorrow.  There’s most certainly NOT a Bank of England anywhere outside of London.  We would have been pooched!  So...should you be planning any trips to the UK in the next little while and you’re picking up British Pounds Sterling at the bank, make sure they are the new issue bills, or you’ll be stuck running around hell’s half acre getting them swapped out.  Right now it’s 5 and 10 pound notes that have been re-issued.  The 20 pound notes will be changed out in another 2 years.
