We checked out of our spot in Praia do Vau and headed to Albufeira. We made one pit stop on the way in a small town called Alcantarilha to see the Capela dos Ossos. That translates to ‘Chapel of Bones’, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. There are 3 of these chapels around Portugal, but I really think that old saying ‘you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ‘em all’ would apply.
It’s tiny and creepy made from the bones of bodies from the churchyard cemetery. Needless to say, there wasn’t a lineup to get in...I mean to visit, not to be one of the cast of characters.
One thing I can say about this part of Portugal...they love to cycle here. There were tons of cyclists on these narrow roads. And when we arrived in Albufeira the traffic was horrendous...and it was on account of a huge cycle race in the city with the start/finish line right across from our hotel.
We enjoyed a great meal down by the water and wandered around Old Albufeira. There is a distinct difference between the ‘feel’ of the last place compared to this one. Much more going on here. We’ll see how that impacts us as the week progresses.
