Yesterday we walked 35 minutes into Portimao and from there caught another Vamus to the little town inland of Silves. It used to be the capital of the Algarve and is known for having the most well preserved castle in the area.
There’s something we’ve discovered on this trip. It doesn’t matter if you’re in ‘Old Town Lagos’, or ‘Old Town Portimão’, or ‘Old Town Albufeira’, or ‘Old Town Porto’…it basically doesn’t matter WHAT name you put after ‘Old Town’, they all look the same.
While waiting for the bus to Silves we met up with Fernand from France. He was traveling alone. He was quite excited when we heard we were from Canada cause he figured we’d speak French. When I told him I only spoke ‘un petite peu’ he chuckled.
It was a short visit in Silves. We wandered through the cobblestone streets, had a beer, and commented on how it felt like every other town we’d visited. The beer tasted the same too. We saw the sites and headed to the bus stop and there we bumped into Fernand again. He commented on how disappointed he was with the town, and especially the castle which he had come to see. We didn’t visit the castle. We saw it situated way up at the highest point in the town. Seemed like a lot of walking to look at a bunch of old bricks and shit. After our chat with Fernand we were glad we passed on it.
