Day #10 - busy day on the beach again

Praia da Rocha, Faro District, Portugal
Saturday’s are busy days here on our big beach.  Today we saw LOTS going on as we went on our morning constitutional along the boardwalk.

Little kids were playing ‘footie’ as they call it here, or soccer as we call it.  They were little tykes and they played barefoot on the sand.  A recipe for broken toes, if you ask me!
As we walked out to the lighthouse we saw several people fishing and there were TONS of little fish visible in the water.  Sardines maybe?  I told Kier they’d be much further ahead to scoop them out with a net, there were that many.  (Reminds me of that old saying about shooting fish in a barrel…although that seems a bit ‘hit and miss’ to me…I know…I know…I hear the groans at that one!!). Anyway…Kier said they aren’t fishing for those little ones, they’re trying to catch the fish that EAT those little ones.  Didn’t see anyone reeling anything in.

The surfers were out in full force and they were all just youngn’s.  We weren’t sure how it all worked, but there would be an announcement of several numbers called out, then a few minutes later there’d be a buzzer.  Then several little surfers would leave the water and others would enter.  Rinse and repeat.  Unfortunately, the surf was relatively calm today, so not much in the way of challenging waves.  But…they were just wee’ans.

And finally, we sat down to watch this paddle sport on the beach.  There were many courts set up and people playing in doubles format.  They were using small little paddles, a bit bigger than pickleball paddles.  The balls looked like tennis balls.  The court was much smaller than badminton.  It was odd…so we went to ‘the Google’.  And…we learned that it is actually ‘beach tennis’.  Who knew that was even a thing!!

Throw in a workout, a beer at our local Irish Pub to get the low down for tomorrow’s big day, a meet up in our hotel lobby with some new friends from Donegal, Ireland, and tonight binge watching 4 episodes of ‘Last One Laughing - Ireland’, it’s been a full day.
Time for bed!
