Island adventure number 2

Singapore, Singapore
So today I had another walk/train/ferry adventure to get out to the 'Southern Islands', which are just south of Sentosa Island. I hopped off the ferry at St John's Island at about 10:40, and went to have a look at the Marine Park Education and Outreach Centre. It was pretty basic but had some interesting info about the conservation work they're doing on nearby islands. There were also cats everywhere! Apparently the islands (or at least the 2 connected by a bridge) are known for that, that there are stray cats everywhere - not sure why! After that I walked over the bridge to Lazarus Island, where I'd heard there was a really nice beach. There sure was, and it was completely deserted! I sunscreened myself and went for a little swim, and ate the lunch I'd brought. I just lazed on the beach and swam for an hour and a half or so, and then got dressed again and went for a little walk around Lazarus. Not much to see, just jungle and beach. At about 2:15 I headed back to the jetty, ready for the ferry at 2:45 over to Kusu Island, just nearby. This island was tiny - my original plan had been to spend the whole day there, and I'm glad I didn't. The ferry stopped for an hour there, so I went and checked out the temple, which had a bridge over a 'turtle pond' (where I spotted lots of fish and a squid??), the tortoise sanctuary, and climbed the hill to the shrines at the top. That all took me about half an hour and then I was ready to go! So I wandered back to the ferry jetty through the trees and sat in a nice spot nearby. At 4 the ferry left and headed back to town. I caught the train from the terminal back to Chinatown, where I had a shower and a little rest. It was then that I discovered my back is quite burnt! One downside to travelling alone/finding amazing deserted beaches, no back-sunscreen-applicator. I tried, but obviously failed. I got ready again and went and had some dinner. I haven't been able to find a place with a one-person serving of chilli crab so I solved that problem when I found a place that did chilli crab pau (the big steamed dumplings). They were great! I doubt they had any real crab in them, but it showed me what it should taste like at least. Then I headed up to the Screening Room, a bar that shows classic movies each night. They were showing a movie called Europa Europa at 7 so I figured why not! I had a fantastic porter and stayed for the movie.

I hope St John's island does have a lot of restaurants as that might explain all of the the cats - trying to escape!
