Neerim South, Victoria, Australia
We woke up at the fairly reasonable time of 7:30 on Monday morning after an exhausted sleep and had a weird day of chasing our luggage while also trying to relax and adapt to being in Melbourne again. The next couple of days followed a very similar pattern, as we called Emirates, Qantas, British Airways and dnata baggage services chasing updates that were hard come by. We managed to ascertain that our bags had been taken off the second half of our flight (that we'd missed) but because they had British Airways tags, they'd never been put on our second Emirates flight as those two airlines are not 'friends'. Fortunately we were told on Monday night that they were being put on the next available flight to Melbourne. However, when we got the call from the airport on Tuesday morning, only one bag had arrived. This led to further chasing through Tuesday and Wednesday, and finally Peter's bag arrived on Thursday afternoon. This meant he missed three days of work, which was very unfortunate but unavoidable.
I worked from home each day this week, which provided a very strange new status quo for the moment. Parents emailed me work from their children and asked a variety of questions - or didn't, which I had to follow up later in the week. The time difference works surprisingly well as they often send the children's work in the late afternoon/evening UK time, so it's there when I wake up and I can respond with marking and feedback ahead of the next UK school day.
In the afternoons we have been reading, going for walks and generally trying to relax and adjust. And of course stopping at beer o'clock for some beer and wine with Mum and Dad. Once Peter's bag arrived on Thursday we felt a bit more relaxed, although my visa appointment has now been cancelled so that's begun a new line of problems. I suppose there's no chance of a 'relaxing holiday' in the current global circumstances though. We've got one more week of quarantine but with the visa appointment cancelled we have no real reason to head back to the city, particularly since we can't go visit my friends or anything. We'll have to play it by ear and see how things are looking at the end of next week, because who knows what the world will be like by then!
