Mumbles Pier, Wales, United Kingdom
This morning started off beautiful and sunny, and we packed up the carriage and the car and set off just after 10. It was a 40 minute drive through what I’m sure would have been beautiful hilly views if it wasn’t for the fog! As it was we took it nice and slow and eventually wiggled down onto larger roads through a more wooded landscape. After turning through a tiny little town we arrived at the tiny little car park that was the entrance to Henrhyd Falls, and made our way down a steep, rocky and slippery trail through thick woods. I was surprised at how many people were at the bottom - clearly summer holidays have started in Wales as a lot of them were children! The wet and rocky path passed further alongside a little river, and as we went the sound of the waterfall got louder and louder. We eventually popped out at a viewing spot, where we admired southern Britain’s highest waterfall. You could walk along a path that went behind the waterfall, but there was a bit of a line of people and it also looked very slippery. After admiring the waterfall, and talking about the Dark Knight movies, which the waterfall features in, we headed back up the path and to the car. I couldn’t believe how many extra cars had filled the car park in the time we were gone, and it was actually a bit of a challenge getting out! Good timing heading off then I think.
Our next stop was Swansea, so we drove down through more woods, although joining onto bigger roads as we went. We were visiting the BrewDog there to get Peter a stamp in his passport, so we got a park nearby and wandered in. Luckily they had seating out the front so we got a drink and a couple of cool-looking takeaway cans and sat down for a relax. When we were ready to head off, we wandered up to Swansea Castle and admired that before going back to the car. This is the only time of day I can think of when the sun was out and we were actually in it, but later we realised we were both burnt (although Peter more so than me). We were in the sun for such a short amount of time though, it seems crazy that that could have been it!
From Swansea we headed around to the Mumbles, a seaside town on the edge of the Gower Peninsula. As we drove there in a fair bit of traffic (Friday afternoon in the summer I guess?) the rain began. It was just a little drizzle to begin with, but by the time we’d arrived at the Mumbles Pier, it was becoming heavier. We’d been planning to walk out to the Lighthouse off the coast because it was low tide, but the rain made that a less-than-appealing idea. We ate our lunch of leftover lamb at an undercover bench and then gave up and went back to the car. I’d been keen for a drive around the Gower peninsula and maybe a few stops at beaches around the place, but the roads were tiny and the rain was getting heavier so we ditched the idea and headed for the Gower Brewery over on the other coast of the peninsula.
Unfortunately when we arrived this also turned out not to have any kind of taproom or seating, just a very basic shop in what was clearly a storeroom up the front. We grabbed a couple of bottles to try later but at this point gave up on Gower and decided to head to our accommodation in Pembrokeshire. We started listening to Serial the other day so we continued that on the hour-long drive to Templeton. When we arrived we found a cute little bnb across the road from a pub (which was closed). It looked great, except for the lack of anywhere to buy or eat dinner. After bringing our stuff inside and a bit of research, we decided to drive down to Saundersfoot for dinner, about 5-10 minutes down the road. We called ahead and were told we didn’t need to book at the pub we were planning to go to, but by the time we got down there and parked the car the rain was really starting to come down. They didn’t have any undercover seating left, so the choice was sit in the rain or go elsewhere. Luckily they recommended a couple of spots and after one place being booked out, we managed to find a spot at a pub on the beach with umbrellas up in their beer garden. The menu was seriously basic but at least the chips were good, so we had a simple dinner (I had sausages and chips and Peter scampi and chips) before giving up as it started to pour. We drove back to the bnb and had a quiet evening catching up on this, reading and watching Canada’s Drag Race.
