Arrochar, Scotland, United Kingdom
Glasgow was a very brief stop over and after a hotel breakfast on Tuesday morning we walked straight back to Queen Street station and hopped on the train to Arrochar & Tarbet. This train was run by the West Highlands Railway and it was a beautiful scenic journey that ran to the coast and then followed Loch Long inland. For a whole stretch at the end we had clear views out over the Loch and it’s surrounding villages, but mostly of forest-covered hills. We arrived in Arrochar & Tarbet at around 12:15, and after putting sunscreen and hats on spotted a trail leading up into the trees behind the station. Looking on google, we thought this might be a quicker walk than following the highway into town, so decided to head on up. It turned out to be a more challenging walk than anticipated, particularly for Peter carrying both a big pack and a little backpack. However, we did have some beautiful views over the Loch and hills, and ended up in town at around 1.
It was too early to check in but too hot to keep wandering around with heavy bags so after dropping our big bags in reception, we sat down for a drink on the deck of the pub next door. After a while, we decided to go for an explore and sought out some lunch at another hotel down the road. Our shared fish and chips was delicious - and perfect for the hot weather! Once we’d finished, we headed off down the road again, following it around the top of the Loch and for a bit of an explore near the trail that we’re going to attempt tomorrow. Then it was back to the hotel to check in! We spent most of the afternoon lounging around and then had a delicious dinner in the pub next door.
