Our two main goals for our rest day were to rest our legs and get our washing done – a slightly tricky combination with how hilly Haworth has turned out to be! We also had to be out of the house for parts of the day as Paul would be working from the living room (our ‘bedroom’) and had a job interview later in the day. As a result, Peter and I got up at around 8ish and after having a couple of coffees in the Airbnb headed down to the laundrette at the bottom of the road. We were surprised to find that it was actually a ‘laundry service’ type laundrette so slightly nervously dropped off our clothes and went to the café across the street. The Mill Hey Café was a gorgeous but very busy little café run by a chatty local woman. We ordered and then sat pondering what to do with our day. Just as our food arrived, Micky and Simon wandered up the road and popped in to say hi. They told us that they were planning to try out the steam railway that ran from Haworth to Keighley, which sounded perfect for an outing for people with tired legs.
After popping back to the Airbnb to grab some things, we walked back down the hill with Bryan and Ros to get our tickets at the station. The 11:46 train pulled in right on time with some dramatic whistles, and we jumped on board the ‘pub carriage’ where Micky and Simon were already onboard having travelled the line down to the other end and back. We all ordered a little half pint of the local bitter – more for novelty than anything else – and enjoyed the scenery as the train chugged out towards Keighley. It was only a 20 minute journey and sped past before we arrived in the town – confusingly pronounced ‘Keith-ley’. We’d all planned to get a pub lunch but the first two pubs we passed didn’t serve food so as Peter and I popped into Sainsbury’s, the others found us a spot at a Buddhist café. There was nothing I could eat for lunch there so we ended up just getting a coffee (I ordered a soy chai and somehow ended up with a revolting soy latte) and a delicious piece of clementine cake.
Once everyone had finished their food and drinks we headed back to one of the pubs. It was a little deceptively named The Yorkshire Tap - we assumed it would have some nice beers, but we quickly found the girl behind the bar didn’t know what stouts were and the taps contained Corona, Stella, and a range of local bitters from one brewery. Luckily for us, we only had time for a quick drink before we had to head back to the station anyway, where we hopped on the steam train again for the return journey. This time we sat in one of the back carriages, which we had to ourselves, and admired the ‘smallest train station in Britain’ as we passed it (we’d missed it on the way there). Aurelia met us at the station and everyone headed off to check out the other side of Haworth while I quickly ducked to the laundrette to pick up our laundry.
When I found everyone again, after a fairly steep walk up the hill, they were checking out the stores on a very cute cobblestone street. After poking about for a while, we found another pub and settled in for a sit and some snacks for a while. It was about 3:30 at this point, and Paul’s interview was at 3 so we knew we had a fair while to kill. Luckily there was a lovely wine bar across the road so we moved across to there at some point, where Paul eventually joined us. At this point there was no point walking all the way across town so we wandered down the hill and sat in the sun at the park for a little while, watching people’s dogs run around and resting our legs. We had a dinner booking at the Haworth Old Hall and when we made our way there, we found a gorgeous old pub with brilliant food. They even had gluten free fish and chips! Most of us were pretty keen for an early night after dinner so we headed down the hill and
Paul, Bryan, Micky and Simon headed to another pub while the rest of us went back to the Airbnb.
