Changing of the Guard

London, England, United Kingdom
Heather wanted to see the changing of the guard and Buckingham Palace, which only happens on certain days, and today is one of the days. We showered and whatnot and headed out. First we walked to Trafalgar Square and then on down The Mall (which rhymes with 'pal') toward the palace.

At Buckingham Palace there was a huge crowd of people already there. And plenty of police to ensure that nobody stood in the wrong place or crossed the street where it wasn't allowed.

The ceremony itself was long and tedious with limited visibility due to the huge crowd and the giant fence in front of the palace that blocks any view of the ceremony. Occasionally they had to open one of the gates to let a troupe in or out, offering a brief glimpse of what was going on.

After the ceremony we walked across to Green Park to look at the Canada Memorial and then across the park and into the Park Lane hotel where we found bathrooms (whew!).

Walked down to Knightsbridge again and went into Harrods department store to have a look around. Harrods is very posh.

And full of expensive stuff like giant teddy bears and personal submarines.

The most expensive thing we saw was a collage made of rolled up bits of paper money from around the world that cost 58,000 pounds.

From Harrods we took the subway to Piccadilly Circus.

Walked through China Town and on to Trafalgar Square area again where we went to the Harp pub and had pints and pork pies.

Then went to the National Gallery again and knocked off another wing full of masterpieces.

Stopped for groceries at the supermarket on the way back to the flat. Ate our supper with a bottle of wine. Heather took a nap while Ken read.

At 7:30 we walked to the Novello Theatre for the musical Mama Mia. Heather really liked it!
