A Short Outing

London, England, United Kingdom
This morning we needed to go to the bank for David, so we decided to make a short 'outing' of it by stopping in the John Soane museum on the way back.

The museum consists of three adjacent houses, all designed by Soane, who was an architect. While they don't look like much from the outside, there is more going on inside.

Soane lived in the middle house of the three, and he designed it so that it gets wider as you go back (and the adjacent houses get narrower. In the back there is a museum that takes up almost the whole width of the three properties, just to store his immense collection of antiquities. Highlights were the giant Egyptian sarcophagus in the basement crypt and the picture room, with walls that open up like giant doors to reveal more painting on the walls behind the walls.

From there we decided to walk to the Tate Modern again and have a proper look around. On the way we stopped to get pictures of the big trees and the old-style phone booths that are typical of London.

When we got to the Millennium bridge the tide was out, so Ken was able to go down onto the river bed for a look. (The Thames river is tidal at London and according to the guide book, the difference between high tide and low tide can be as much as 26 ft!)

We crossed the Millennium bridge to the Tate Modern, and this time we spent a few hours going through it. Some of it was cool...

Some of it just weird.

On the top floor there is an observation deck where we took some pictures of the surrounding buildings.

Once we were bored with the Tate, we walked along the river to Blackfriars Bridge. Strangely, right next to the bridge is Blackfirars Station, which is a train station that spans the Thames, built on its own (nameless?) bridge.

Bought groceries on the way back to the flat and ate supper in our room. Spent a quiet evening at home getting our stuff ready for the trip to India, which will be the day after tomorrow. One more full day in London before we go.
