Sick day for Heather

New Delhi, Delhi, India
Ken woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't get back to sleep. Jet lag I guess. Heather slept well though. We managed to wake up in time for breakfast in the morning. While Ken went for breakfast, Heather did yoga. As usual, the upstairs restaurant is super slow and it took 45 minutes to prepare 4 slices of French toast and a cup of tea.

When Ken got back to the room he found Heather had put her back out. He applied some massage and tiger balm but it didn't help much. Heather lay down on the bed to wait out the back spasms and Ken went for a walk.

Outside the hotel it was the same sort of craziness as previous days. Doesn't seem to matter that it's Sunday.

Ken walked down the Main Bazar Road to the Delhi train station. Crossing the busy road in front and heading through the main gate, he was confronted by two men demanding to see his train ticket. Assuming it was another scam, Ken ignored them and kept walking, despite one of the men grabbing at his arm. This seems to have been the right decision as they left him alone after that.

Approaching the station from the opposite side as on our first day, Ken was able to find the pedestrian overpass that we'd been unable to find before. It was crowded with people heading to and from their trains and also had families camped out and people sleeping along the sides.

Ken stopped along the railing and was unfortunate enough to witness the woman next to him puking between the bars of the railing. At least he was up on the overpass and not waiting for a train below.

On the other side of the station he once again crossed the lot full of taxis and auto rickshaws to get to Bhavbhuti Marg (marg being hindi for street or road). Then followed that south to the concentric ring streets that make up the shopping district of Connaught Place. The marg was a pretty dull street, but he still saw a couple of interesting things, like a burned out car and a pair of big rhesus monkeys. (Then he saw the two monkeys have sex.)

At the centre of Connaught Place there is a grassy central park (called Central Park) with lots of families picnicking and young couples kanoodeling on the lawn.

The first ring around the park has lots of restaurants and expensive stores for tourists. There are also lots of banks, all of which had long lineups of people trying to get enough cash out to pay their way. (It was interesting to see that there was one queue for men and a separate queue for women.)

After wandering around Connaught Place for a while, Ken walked back toward the hotel along Radial Road No 3, which is a wide street with a lot of cars, but few pedestrians and almost no street vendors. It was interesting that here, where there was a very wide sidewalk, everyone still chose to walk in the busy street with the cars whizzing by them. Ken tried walking on the sidewalk, but quickly figured out from the smell that the sidewalk is were people go to the bathroom. Ken walked on the road with the cars.

Back on Main Bazar Road, it was all the usual cows and rickshaws.

Ken woke up Heather and we went for supper at the upstairs restaurant. And again, it was pretty good. Heather still wasn't feeling well so we stayed in again tonight.
