Exploring the park

We awoke to a spectacularly beautiful day and set out to explore the park . The western side of this peninsula forms Thunder Bay, and the city of that name is across from its southern tip. This side has steep cliffs down to the lake, and we drove to a spectacular overlook, cantilevered out over the lake. Lake Superior was uncharacteristically calm this morning, so much so that we could see the clouds reflected in it. On the way back for lunch at our campsite we saw a big black bear on the road, as well as more deer than we had ever seen at any one time. In the afternoon we visited Silver Islet, a small community just outside the park on the eastern side of the peninsula, which slopes gently down to the rocky shore of the lake. They mined silver from an offshore island in the 1890s, and we had tea at the town store there, which is preserved in its original state.
