Pelican in the Prairie

Who would imagine seeing a pelican in the midst of the prairie? But there they were, swimming in Reesor Lake in the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park . The Cypress Hills, in which the Reesor ranch is located, spring up out of the prairie to form the highest point in mainland Canada between Labrador and the Rocky Mountains. Back in the prairie on our way westward, we passed huge irrigated fields. This was the area settled during the "dry farming" period after 1910, and many of these farms failed at the time because of the sparse rainfall here. We caught our first glimpse of the Rockies just west of Lethbridge and camped north of Fort Macloud, the first headquarters of the Northwest Mounted Police, whose fort is now reconstructed as a museum.
