Dragon Hill

Santa Cruz, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
Last night was an interesting night on the ship, a little rough to say the least.

Disembarkation was at 8 .00am for Cerro Dragon translated is dragon hill. This is where all of the land iguanas are. These iguanas are yellow, red and brown in colour. This trail is 2.8km in length and over rugged terrain. I take the other option and do the zodiac ride around the island and a short walk where we see one flamingo, some shore birds and marine iguanas. I am a little miffed as they forgot to tell us that if you take the shorter walk option you will not actually see the land iguanas. Geoff has taken some pictures so I am lucky. I also did see them at the Galapagos National Park Rearing Centre too but would have probably did the walk.

Not long back and it is time to go snorkelling. Geoff went to Guy Fawkes Islets for deep water snorkelling and I will do the one from the beach.

Lunch was a buffet feast of Ecuadorian food to allow us to try all of the different types of food. It was really different.

We move to El Eden where we all board for zodiac rides close to the island to see what wild life we can see . The very informative daily wrap up and tomorrows adventure packed schedule.

Tonight before dinner we have a wine tasting to sample the 2 whites, 1 rose, and 3 reds. Mmmmm, the reds were really nice. The tasting wasn't a real tasting as I reckon we drank about 4 or 5 glasses as the waiters tasting sample was nearly a full glass. This activity is on the bow while we circumnavigate Daphne Major Island which is famous for 2 current day biologists who have spent 40 years seeing how the finches evolve with the changing environment.

Star gazing was the activity tonight on the top deck of the bow. The sky was so clear and there were thousands of stars. Apparently if you are only on or around the equator it is the only place where you can see the Southern Cross and the Big Dipper both in the sky. The naturalist was great as he had a laser pointer so we could see where he was pointing to. Time for bed as the end of another really busy day.
