Valparaiso so colourful

Santiago, Chile
Weather fine temperature 17 - 7 degrees

We left the hotel at 8 .30am for an hour and a half drive to Valparaiso. We passed through some of the wine making area in Casablanca Valley.

Valparaiso was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. This is because of the unusual city and the fact that before the Panama Canal was built it was a busy port for all ships which came around Cape Horn and it was the major commercial city for the entire Pacific Coast.   The city is atop a hill and consist of colourful houses. Some not so well maintained but never the less very colourful and graffiti every where. This graffiti can be contracted and some is obviously illegal. The bus dropped us off at the top and we walked down through the rabbit warren of streets. We stopped for coffee at a place with amazing views from the balcony and once more on our way again through the streets up and down steps.  At the last spot, you need to catch a rickety funicular down to the bottom.

There is a bustling city also at the bottom with so much activity in the streets. It appears that everyone here catches busses. An old trolley bus is still in operation around the city. The central plaza of the city you can stand and all around are the important buildings. The nicest one was the Navy Building.

Chilean dinner at a restaurant tonight and we are so looking forward to this. The Chilean wines last night were beautiful.

Just arrived back from dinner and the wines were matched with the food, mmmmmm so good and tasted amazing.

We are off to Argentina, Buenos Aires tomorrow and will arrive at approx. early evening.
