Flight of the condors

Chivay, Arequipa, Peru
Weather started off cloudy but cleared. Temperature was 22 to 5 degrees.
4,800 metres above sea level

This morning was freezing when we left the hotel at 7am to go to the canyon so we could see the condors . There were some dirt roads but no problem with them except for the one way tunnel through a mountain where the ceiling is not reinforced. It went for about 1 km and you can't see anything coming. Glad to see the light at the end of the tunnel. I can tell you we were all glad to be out on the other side. And yes, we had to come back through it to return.

The condors were so majestic and just glide on the thermal currents. I think that the guide said that they are related to the vulture family. My goodness, it was hard to try and snap them as they are always in flight and I ended up with a tip of a wing or a blank picture of the sky. Needless to say that there are not many in focus photos of the condors. We stopped at a couple of scenic photos opportunities of the canyon and saw the expansive terraces which the Inca’s made for planting which catches the water from the mountains on the way down. We called into a little town called Maca to have a look around and picked up a couple of beers and chips to fill in the afternoon on the terrace and in the hot tub.

After all the trip is half way and we are at approx. 3,500 metres above sea level so this is to acclimatise us for the altitude as we will be ascending higher.
