Puno, Peru
Weather fine, temperature 23 to -5 degrees. If I thought that yesterday was cool then today is freezing.
3,800 metres above sea level

We left at 8 .45am so we didn't have to feel the -5 degrees. I got a couple of snaps of the sunrise over the Uros Islands. Launch took us to the floating islands which were only about 15 minutes from our hotel. The dock was in front of the hotel and we even had our own launch just for our group.

There are approx. 80 islands so there is a check point at the entry where the people greeting advise the launches which island to visit otherwise they tourists may end up visiting the same islands and the other islands miss out since this is there only source of income. These islands have a elementary school, kindergarten and a floating church.
The guide gave a talk on how they arrived in this place and they showed us how to make the floating islands in a mini version.  The people also showed us that they can barter within the islands for some food stuffs and the money which we pay for their craft work also means that they can buy clothes etc. On the island we visited there were 5 families living there .

After the guide has finished there is a mad rush by the Uros people to grab a lady each and take them back to their house to show us how they live. The lady we visited lives in this hut with her husband and her 3 children.  The house even had a solar panel so they could watch a black and white TV. They also have one energy efficient light in these little huts. When they are finished showing you their house they invite you to their market stall and boy is it hard sell as sometimes they may not see other tourists for another week.

We were then taken to a local school which APT sponsor.  The children sang a couple of songs to us and then we were invited into the class rooms to see how they work. APT has built the school a building which houses a kitchen and enough room to seat all of the children for lunch.

For our lunch we headed up to a restaurant on the side of this island. Man we are at 3,910 metres above sea level and need to have a breather every once and a while to make it to the restaurant. The views are amazing.

Tonight is free time so we are headed into the town of Puno for a look around for a couple of hours. Did not buy anything but took some photos. The temperature really plummeted so we headed back tot he hotel.  The taxi fair was only 10 soliels which is about AUD $4, what a bargain.
