Walking around Cusco and city tour

Saturday, June 06, 2015
Cusco, Peru
Weather fine, temperature 18 to -2 degrees
3,300 metres above sea level

When we started this morning at 9am it had warmed up a little we just needed a jumper .
The first place was Convent of Santa Domingo which is across the road from the hotel, how is that for close.

Next on the city walk was the local markets which was very interesting. These are open every Saturday and Sunday for the locals. The butcher, cheese shop, spices, chicken shop, guinea pig seller, flower market, juice bars, food stalls and even some tourist markets are here around the perimeter of the complex. Bit smelly as usual with all of the stalls together.

A visit to the main plaza to see the statue which a little guy was impersonating on the street. He was really good and it was only 30 cents for a picture.

It is Corpus Christie here which is a huge catholic celebration for the locals. We were extremely lucky as the Cathedral we visited had the 12 saints transported from all of the other churches in the area. Some have come as far as 45 km and they have been carried there by hand on rails similar to how the pharaohs were transported. Wow, these fellows are really dedicated.  If they get tired they just ask for a replacement. Otherwise, there would normally be only one saint in the cathedral.

Lunch was at an amazing a la carte restaurant. We were so full after 3 courses so none of us want dinner.

Afternoon was free time for us so we looked around a bit more before it got too late and too cold.
