Arrived in the Amazon

Amazon River, State of Amazonas, Brazil
Just have arrived back to Lima so I can now complete the blog as we have not had access to the internet in the Amazon region.

Weather fine and hot but it almost rains some time during the day here . Usually temperature is around 33 to 24 degrees. 106 metres above sea level.

Sunrise this morning on the Amazon River, it was about 5.30am. Isn't it beautiful?

I have put up some pictures of our room on the Delfin II, very comfortable but the shower does not have much pressure so it takes a while to shower. Only 29 people plus staff are on board. They make up our room 3 times a day. Last night we did not get a lot of sleep as the ship was motoring so fast up the Amazon to get to our destination to start this morning’s sight-seeing at 6.30am. There are so many trees floating in the water, sometimes we nudge them.

We left in a skiff (similar to a zodiac but aluminium) as there are a lot of trees floating in the river and saw some parrots, vultures, other birds and monkeys. We couldn’t get a picture of the monkeys as they just wouldn’t stay still! The National Park for the Peru side of the Amazon is 5 million acres and currently we are in the change from the wet season to the dry season . This means that 80% of this area is underwater. The highest difference in the average water level from the wet season to the dry season is 10 metres. At the time of our visit the water level had dropped approx. 2 and a half metres so there is another 7 and a half metres drop to occur.

After lunch we went for a swim in a lake off of the Amazon River. The water for the river and lake reminds me of the Brisbane River, muddy brown. The water temperature was fine. We saw some pink and some grey dolphins but like anything here people make them stay under or fly away.

This afternoon we are back out on the skiffs again at 4pm for another adventure of animal spotting. We saw a sloth but he was curled up in a ball in the tree top and some more monkeys. A couple of McCaw’s and a toucan flew over our heads. I am surprised that there is not a lot of wild life here in the Amazon. It appears that some searching needs to take place to spot these animals which we do as we are out adventuring. There was a little rain on the way back to the ship so a rainbow was to be seen. The sunset was also pretty good.
