Recovery Day

Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Well, we knew not to make any plans for after our day at the Volksfest and it was a good thing we didn't.

Connie and I slept in until about 10am when Peter and Regina (Isa’s parents) arrived from having dropped Hugo off at the kinderschule (daycare) . Connie of course felt just fine. Me…not so much. Actually it was more sleep deprivation rather than hangover for me. I don’t know how Isa and Hanno managed to get up and make it to work. At any rate, we hadn’t seen Regina in over a year so we had to get up and visit with them, especially since we didn’t know how long it would be since we’d see them again. Today was their 48th wedding anniversary and they were heading for the Volksfest to hang out a bit and have lunch there, so they didn’t stay very long. After they left, Connie made plans with Lori and Tracy to meet up at the stadtmitte to do a bit of shopping (yes, more shopping). Both Lori and Tracy said that Steve and Bubba were in no shape to do anything and were staying at the hotel. I took the opportunity to grab some more downtime as I wasn’t interesting in anything remotely resembling shopping.

It was nearing 2pm and I still hadn’t heard anything from Steve and Bubba. It was only a 20 minute walk and it was a beautiful day, so I decided to walk over to their hotel to see if they were still alive, making a short stop at the MacDonald’s on the way for a burger . I don’t know what MacDonald’s puts in their burgers, but there’s just something about them that just makes one feel better after a night of drinking. I got to the hotel only to find both of them still in bed! So I did the only thing I could do…I waited for them downstairs at the bar and had a beer. They joined me shortly after and we sucked back a couple of big bottles of water along with a couple of beers, which seemed to do the trick. We got a hold of Hanno and the ladies and made arrangements to meet up at Carl’s Brauhaus downtown for supper. Bubba and I were both suffering with some leg pains that, upon reflection, we realized were the result of riding the bumper cars at the Volksfest after we left the ShatzieBar tent. We’d almost forgotten about that little event.

By the time we arrived at the Brauhaus, Connie, Lori and Tracy were already there and had managed to snag a table, which turned out to be lucky as most all the big tables were reserved. Bubba and I continued our recovery with a nice big Maß of beer but Steve, having not eaten anything all day, was now feeling pretty nasty and stuck with a cola. We ordered some munchies to hold us over and Hanno arrived with Hugo shortly after followed by Isa. Hanno of course joined Bubba and I with a Maß. We started trying to recap the events of the previous night and how much we’d actually consumed. According to our bill from our beer tent, as a group we had drunken 21 Maß’s of beer, 2 liters of wine a huge platter of meats and cheeses, 3 chickens and an assortment of other goodies. On top of this Bubba, Steve, Hanno and I had also downed a half dozen shooters and a liter of beer each at another tent. No wonder we were feeling a bit rough around the edges. That said, we all agreed that there was no way we could have consumed a fraction of that much beer in Canada without feeling bloated to the point of bursting, the German beer being much less carbonated that our beer, not to mention tastier.

This being Bubba, Tracy, Steve and Lori’s last evening in Stuttgart, they wanted to get a last taste of German food and Carl’s Brauhaus was the perfect place to do that. We had a great meal of schnitzel, spätzle, maultaschen, zweibelkuchen (a kind of pizza with a white cream sauce, bacon and onions) and an assortment of other goodies. The ladies followed this up with cakes, but the rest of us were stuffed and abstained.

Afterward dinner we said our goodbyes to Steve and Lori who were heading to Venice the following day for a few days before returning to Toronto as well as Bubba and Tracy who were heading to Amsterdam. Connie and I would be staying an extra day to hang out with Hanno, Isa and Hugo before meeting up with Bubba and Tracy in Amsterdam. Connie and I continued our tradition of staying up with Hanno and Isa until well after midnight at their place.

Oh, and for those still reading the blog... The big shopping day when we first arrived? Herr Koch forgot to mention most of the time we spent waiting was due to him picking out his Prada and Gucci shoes... I have the pic's to prove it!
