Amboseli National Park, Kenya

We flew to our first game reserve, Amboseli National Park, and got there in the mid-morning. Our camp, Tortilis Camp, was only 15 kms from the airport, but it took us 2 hours to drive there because of all of the wildlife we stopped to see. We have included pictures of some of the animals we saw on the ride back from the airport. It was mostly locals who worked in the camp and you got an in-person wake-up call.

Amboseli is known for its herds of elephants and it did not disappoint. We saw many, many elephants, wildebeest and zebra. We even saw some lions and a rare serval cat. Our soft-spoken guide was named Ali and he was very pleasant and knowledgeable. He also had recordings of hyena calls on his phone that he used to play tricks on us and to confuse other hyenas. It was funny.

The camp is known for its view of Kilimanjaro, but the mountain remained hidden in fog for most of our visit. We only caught one quick peak of the summit on one afternoon. We had an amazing bush breakfast out in the middle of the savannah. The expansive grasslands and occasional acacia trees are a sight to behold! At night there are bats that fly over us while we are having dinner. One night there were two lions that came down to the watering hole near our camp. Kevin went for a jog one afternoon and quickly decided to stay within the fenced compound; no point in winding up as quick snack for one of the cats in the area.

One afternoon, we visited a Masai village. We were greeted with the traditional singing and dancing. A few of our group got in the mix and demonstrated their lack of rhythm. :-)

After two days of game drives and more zebra and elephants than you can imagine, we headed to our next game reserve, Samburu.
