Dubai in June - not the best idea

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

On our way back to the US, we stopped in Dubai for two days. I figured that since we were in that part of the world, we should check it out. Note to self: going to the Middle East in June is not the brightest idea. It was 105 degrees and humid from about 9AM to 7PM. I can handle heat and humidity, but this was pretty much unbearable. Laura refused to go outside and we spent the majority of the day in the air conditioned malls and subways. We got to see the world's tallest building and went to the "top," although in reality the stopping point on the 124th floor is only a little more than half way to the top. It was pretty crazy looking down at the other skyscrapers; we felt like we were in a plane.

One morning I convinced Finn to go on an excursion to the Old Town where the spice and gold souks are located. Despite departing before 8AM, it was roasting hot when we stepped out of the air-conditioned subway. We did meet a nice spice vendor and bought some of his homemade masala mix. The gold souks didn't open until 10AM and we weren't sticking around for any hotter part of the day, so we retreated back to air-conditioning.

On the final evening, I hired a cab at 7PM, a half hour before sunset. We made a quick tour to see the self-proclaimed 7-star hotel and the famous mosque. All in all, we agreed that Dubai can be skipped and definitely should not be visited during summer months.
