-due to the weather we moved our big heli day
. So our kayak day became back to back on the schedule. This meant for another early wake up for the boys and they were thoroughly disgruntled despite the fact that I made the wake up call as late as possible. Nonetheless they got up and rallied through the morning routine and we headed off to the kayak operation that was thankfully 400m down the road.
-we checked in and loaded into the van for the short and bumpy ride to Lowell Point. We got our briefing in dense marine fog and paddled off into Resurrection Bay, so named because the Russian explorer arrived around Easter.
-we were very glad that it was not raining and in fact the sky was blue above the marine fog. The bay was glassy and the temperature was pleasant. We arrived at Tosina Point and walked up the creek to see spawning salmon. They were in a sad state of decay but it was interesting to see heir skulls on the banks and the big set of sharp teeth. We also saw a bald eagle and a seal who was watching us from 100m away
-we had a nice hot cocoa and snack. As we loaded back into the kayaks the fog gave us some peeks of the neighboring peaks. It was quite nice. It was downright balmy when we returned to our launch spot and loaded up. A bumpy ride and we were back at base. It was a fine activity but nothing spectacular. The guides were fun recent college grads and made he experience pleasant. We could have skipped this activity but it made for a good reason to see Seward.
-back to the nearby hotel room for a quick change then off to Zudys for panini lunch and cheesecake desert
. Yum. We promised the kids a yummy treat to celebrate the end of morning activities. We definitely delivered and they were happy
-Laura and I were ready to take a stroll to work off our cheesecake but the rebellious kids were done with activities. They just wanted to hang out in the room. Luckily there was a hotel shuttle that stopped right next door so we handed them the room key and loaded them up and waved goodbye as it drove by. Laura seemed a bit nervous but I thought it was great that everyone got to do what they wanted and have separate activities
-the stroll to the boat harbor was longer than expected so it was good that we had not dragged the boys along. A breeze had picked up so it was a little chilly but we survived and enjoyed the otters and did some casual RV shopping as we walked along the bayside RV parks.
-we returned to the car and drove down Main Street on the way back to the hotel. We felt secure we had seen Seward.
-I still had some energy so I headed out for a solo hike up mount Marathon. It was very steep and huffing and puffing I made it to my destination above the tree line. A quick photo and I descended to the car and rejoined the group.
-we took a quick 100m walk to the nearby Roadhouse Restaurant and had a yummy dinner with the ever present game of spades. Back to the hotel room to watch some Olympics. We let the boys stay up late because of the rebellion and to let them have some input into activities. It was a pleasant day for all
