Wed Aug 10
-a very late and slow start due to the late night Olympics
. We were in no rush anyway and the boys needed to recharge
-we finally got going to Exit Glacier about 8mi up the road. With much protest we headed out on the hike which could be better qualified as a walk. The boys lagged behind and we pressed on agreeing to meet them at the intersection of the loop hike.
-we walked on through the hike and enjoyed the markers which showed the year where the glacier was present. It was sobering to see how quickly the glacier had receded.
-we continued on to the glacier view point and lo and behold the boys were there to cross our paths. We took a few quick pics without the unwilling boys and then hiked back down to meet them
-this was definitely the "everymans hike" but if was worth the visit. Even the boys said so
-we drove north to Girdwood and arrived in time to do an aggressive hike up to the tram. We limited our stops so that the boys would have little excuse and arrived at the base of the tram which was also the start of the hike.
-as usual the first 30 minutes of the hike were met with pleas to head back down the mountain
. Once the boys realized that our we were set in our resolve they started galloping up the mountain like goats. We had to remind them to stay together in a group to protect from bears. Truth be told we just needed some time to catch our breathe.
-after a 1:39 slog uphill we arrived at the tram station. We had climbed 2000ft and were sweaty and ready for the easy ride downhill. We rode the tram down and drove to our familiar condo.
-we took quick showers and then headed to Jack Sprat restaurant for some rare veggies. We had a nice dinner and then retired to our condo for a vicious game of spades.
-thankfully tomorrow is a mellow day with a glacier cruise. And then at last we head home to Maui.
