Panacocha, Provincia de Sucumbíos, Ecuador
Wednesday January 3
-off to national park and local settlement
-pretty neat to c the parrots feeding on the minerals in the clay cliff at the riverside. Learned that they have to do this every day in order to cleans of toxins. Not sure exactly how that works but cool scene.
-are grubs at the native camp. Got to learn about life for the indigenous people. Men make baskets and cooking basin for women as tools. Women are the workers who do a lot of the gathering and all of the cooking and hold rearing. Arranged marriages at 16. Children follow their gender role model from an early age. Use chili in the eyes as a rite of passage and to discipline the children.
-went for a swim in the otter proof cage. Took a mask and could barely see my outstretched hand
-back to lodge for lunch
-got to take canoes out on our own. Walker and I crushed finn in the race. Tried to find the marching wasps but couldn't. I guess my Amazon guide skills need some work. Dropped Walker off and then found finn and we paddled back in against a light breeze. It was still plenty hot
-after a quick shower and more sun screen finn and I headed out to fish for piranhas. Laura n ty decided to chill in the shade
-did a little tour through the canals and didn't see much. Probably too hot for most animals. Made me appreciate what we had seen in the past few days
-stopped to fish in the first spot n not much happening. Moved to a second spot and it wasn't long before a shout came from the back of the boat w Finn yelling "I got one. I got one. ". Sure enough he pulled up a decent sized piranha that he and Miguel spent he next 15 minutes trying to subdue and kill. In the end the piranha ended up as a tasty dish on our dinner table
-in the end our boat caught 6 piranhas, 3 of which were worthy of keeping and eating. I got two good bites and almost hooked one but failed.
