via ferrata - whoo hoo!

Ollantaytambo, Cusco, Peru
7/19 - Fri
-up at 6:55 for another yummy and filling breakfast.   Then we met with Darwin at 8:30 and were off to the local fortress.  He told us about how the Inca king “tricked” a commoner, Ollantay, into building this monstrosity in order to win his daughter.  Of course it was not completed in his lifetime.
-it was a quick visit to the fortress to beat the crowds and then off to our 10AM via ferrata.  We were joined by 10 more people, but Darwin got us up front which really worked out well. It was an exhilarating, leg shaking experience scaling up 1000’ on steel steps and cables.  The cable bridge was particularly scary. It was super fun. To get down, we rode six zip lines which were a hoot as well. An awesome adventure
-back at the hotel, Darwin gave us an afternoon brief on the upcoming activities and the Inca Trail hike.  Then we chilled in the hotel. Around 5 we went looking for the local hummingbird. We think we saw one, but it was smaller than Darwin described.  We will have to ask tomorrow.
-we walked to the town square to gather supplies for the hike: headlamps, buffs, gloves, snacks, etc.  Then we headed to dinner at, of course, Puka Rumi. This time we had to share the restaurant with two other groups but it was great just the same.  We are glad that they get business.
-back to the hotel for cards and wind down and then bed for another day of adventure tomorrow
