-we had a solid night of sleep although it was warm
. We found out why on checkout. The walls are thick and take a long time to cool off. Given the recent warm weather the rooms were very warm.
-we checked out and cycled into the old town center. First we stopped at the VVV, the town info center. It was a good stop because we found out that many of the bike ways we were considering were under construction.
-we went on the walking tour of Dordrecht. It was ok but the walking tour tried to take us through shopping centers rather than pretty wharf areas.
-we made our own way and even peeked in on the church.
-we headed back to the VVV or tourist info center where the very helpful lady confirmed that part of our route was closed due to construction on the dike. She helped us plot an alternative route and we plugged it into the GPS. We grabbed a bite at the cafe next door and then we were off pedaling.
-we saw the dike construction on the way out of town and it was a big deal. Dump trucks, bulldozers, backhoes, etc. Lots of earth getting moved around. The Dutch are crazy
...
-the ride was nice but we were definitely around more traffic. It made us appreciate the previous days' rides. It was still beautiful. And flat. :-)
-mid way through the ride we saw a cafe. We pulled over to stop but quickly realized that it was close to the road. We made an excellent decision to pedal on.
-we were soon in the town square and there were multiple cafes with umbrellas in a quiet area set back from the street with little to no car noise. Yay us! Great decision! We stopped for refreshments and had an awesome time. A great impromptu stop with a good decision and we were very pleased with ourselves and the trip. Exactly what we hoped for. Good fun!
-we pedaled on and finished the ride and were glad that it was a short day. The town of Willemstad looked quite quaint although the harbor kind of seemed like a scene. The hotel had a great location but small and stuffy rooms.
-Laura found an awesome restaurant and we had an incredible meal with a super friendly and helpful waitress. Laura loved eating under the tree canopy in the center of the road. Very cool.
-back to our teeny hotel room for a solid night of sleep.
-today's bike stats: elapsed time 4:10, rolling time 2:20, distance 40 km.
