Ghent, East Flanders, Belgium
Sat Aug 2
-we got up on the late side and bumped into Oz and Texas in the dining room . We all sat around and had bfast and laughed about the past few days. Amazing how even a short shared experience creates closeness.
-we boogied out to go get our rental car. After some minor confusion we found the place and had our little Fiat.
-back to the hotel to grab our bags and checkout. Then into Brugge to take some pics amd tour the town in daylight. Was mobbed with peeps but found back alleys to avoid crowds.
-we were ready to leave but a bit hungry and found a great fuel spot. L had a salad that she loved and my sausages and frittes and salad were pretty good. It was a good stop amongst the mayhem.
-we left Brugge and drove on to Ghent. Roads were easy and signs were good. Belgian drivers are aggressive but if you stay out of the left lane all is good.
-after some searching we found parking sort of near the info center. We went in and after some struggle got help from a lady who basically said that given the late hour on a Sat night, our best bet was to stay way out of town.
-we didn't have any great options and were a little bummed then L came up with the brilliant idea that we would just stay parked in town and tour and have dinner and then drive to our hotel. Brilliant and exactly what we did!
-Ghent was really cool and the walking tour that we got at the info center was a perfect way to see the city sites. It worked out really well with a fun refreshment stop and dinner at a Creole restaurant that we found by mistake after missing our Thai place. It worked out great.
-after a winding, strange drive, we arrived at our hotel. Go GPS. it was located in the middle of nowhere except for the adjacent IKEA. I had to laugh and send a pic to Rob.
-the room was fine and we quickly decided to use the WiFi to book ahead for the next night. We found a place recommended by Lonely Planet and booked it. Then finally to sleep. It was nice to have a day off the bike and recover a bit.
