Sat Jun 13
-up early but closer to 6 so some progress. Hopped the metro to Wescelslaus Square. Surprised how busy metro was on early Sat morning.
-glad we went to Square early before traffic n crowds. Basically a giant paved shopping area but with some interesting architecture. Made our way home through the now familiar Old Town n Charles Bridge.
-bfast then did some research n agreed to go up the hill for views of Prague. We were kind of looking for ways to kill time but this ended up being a good one.
-on the way to the base of the funicular, we took the route along Kampa Island. We'd wanted to try this so it was a bonus and a pleasant walk through a park away from traffic
and crowds.
-at the funicular we quickly rejoined the crowds. The line was very long n we decided to hoof it up the hill. While challenging, this turned out to b a great option as we chose a well shaded trail with few people. The ultimate reward came at the "half way station" where there was a shaded table, beer n a stunning view.
-we continued the short way to the top n met a group from NJ who confirmed our way down. We meandered down via the monastery and dodged the crowds again by taking a lower route. We were happy to return to the hotel for some down time and felt like we had seen Prague.
-we forced ourselves up from a nap to go over and tour the neighboring Wallenstein Palace, seat of the Senate. It was ornate but a quick tour. In the gardens we happened to learn that there would be a singer in an hour. We also stumbled onto a bird of prey show where a falcon buzzed us by inches. It was too bad that we could not understand the enthusiastic presenter who was dressed in Baroque garb for the festival that day.
-back to the room in minutes for a short nap. Then we forced ourselves awake to go listen to the opera singer n the harpsichord. I think that means we have thoroughly done Prague.
-we met Vital who was dropping off our bikes. We got the maps n brief n checked out the gear. We went up to the room m checked out all of the stuff n planned out the first day.
-we realized that it was getting late n we were hungry. Since it had rained, we got a recommendation from the front desk n went to dinner quite close by. Thankfully the waiter was friendly, a first, so we decided that this was a good sign and we were very ready to leave Prague on a good note. The hotel certainly turned out to b in a great location.
-home to bed n dreams of biking.
