Day 6 22nd June 2011
Geiranger to Bergen

Had a decent sleep, one of the first, and woke when the engines changed - we'd arrived in Bergen . Got up for breakfast for the first time which was nice then back to the room for a quick change and off the boat for the shuttle bus to town. The port is a bit commercial and the town about 10 mins drive.

Not a bad day, quite warm and no rain. Apparently Bergen has 220 days of rain each year and recently it rained for 84 days in a row. Lovely. But not today. We walked up to the funicular and took that to the park at the top of the mountain overlooking the city which is sprawling but not so big with 250,000 people - second in Norway after Oslo.

The funicular was excellent and the views exceptional. After a few pics and a wander we tried to find a hopper city guide bus and after a few mishaps eventually found a stop and got on after a short wait. It's not that spectacular as a city though and after half hour there was not that much to see. After our little jaunt round town we headed back to ship via the shuttle and off to lunch . Tina had the shrimp and avocado cocktail and I had the fennel and celeriac soup both delicious followed by chicken and bacon panini which we waited an age for as the chef seemed to be having a bit of trouble with such a difficult dish! A couple who came in after us got theirs first...... Did they book a better grade cabin lol! And when ours turned up it was a bit of French bread not a panini. So we are thinking it must be chef's day off.

All this fresh air makes you a bit sleepy but no chance for a doze as it's afternoon tea time. They really do make the best cup of the day so it can't be missed and of course might just have to have a scone, well we didn't have pudding.

More wandering around the ship this afternoon and then on deck for the sail away which was great this time as the band were playing and people were dancing. Had a Pimms cup to toast Bergen goodbye, listening to the house band who are pretty good, and then watched as we just about cleared the bridge going out of the port . Lots of people standing on it cheering and waving as we sailed under with apparently only 2 metres to spare and then back to get ready for an early dinner. We want to be in the lounge for a classical guitar evening with Mark Ashford at 9.30. Our dinner guests will be down later as they are gold and platinum members and have been invited to drinks with the captain. Another hilarious dinner, although I think we are a tad too noisy and are getting a lot of looks. They probably wish they were on our table……..

Dinner great again, but Tina has only taken a couple of pictures of the food as no one else has their camera out. The recital was also pretty good, and he will be playing live in the planetarium tomorrow instead of the usual sound track so will have to see if we can get tickets.

Went to see if there was more atmosphere on the dance floor tonight as it was party night, but sadly not. We seem to have missed the band again and have only the backing track playing. Not enough people dancing for us. Chickens………. Back to the cabin to watch Under the Tuscan sun but only managed half of it. Getting old. At least we can have a lie in tomorrow as it’s a sea day.
