Columbus, Texas, United States
We like to look at Roadsideamerica.com for sites out of the way that we can visit. When we looked at our route in Texas, we came across a Santa Claus Museum.

Here's the write-up from the site:

Mary Elizabeth Hopkins began her Santa Claus collection in 1913, and only stopped in 1990 because she died. More than 2,000 are on display, as well as Santa art by Norman Rockwell, Thomas Nast, and a complete collection of Haddon Sundblom Coca-Cola Santas. The museum is in a small house, and is the kind of place that has to have Santa & Mrs. Claus actors in each publicity shot to make it look interesting. From the brochure: "The merriment begins as you pull the nose of the Santa door bell and listen as the tune 'Santa Claus is coming to Town,' echoes onto Washington Street."

We called the Chamber of Commerce and they arranged a person (Tess) to come out and open up the house for us at 10am. We could not believe all the shelves and shelves of Santas when we walked in ! It took us an hour of gazing and marveling before we called it a day.

If you like Santa Claus...this is for you!

What a neat find.

From Jill Cross:
Loved the Santa House. Some of those Santas looked familiar. I also Had a Santa collection because it was my favorite character. My dad always played a Santa for my brother & I, cousins & friends around town. He would call cousins prior to Christmas to make sure they were good & their chimneys were clean. He would get so excited he would hyperventilate & people thought he was having a heart attack. He stopped doing it but brought his costume down here & started the tradition here. He did it for years until his breathing was so difficult. He loaned out his costume to another guy who had a real beard. He would drive him around on the golf cart & he was the one who yelled "ho, ho, ho" as he felt the new Santa needed practice. He was my favorite Santa. After he died & I was thinning out "stuff", I decided to get rid of a lot of my Santas. I still love looking at them though as I always think of the greatest Santa in my life.
