Goosenecks of the San Juan River State Park, Utah, United States
We've always wanted to see this place and the views. Seen lots of photos online but never live. So.....

We came here around 7:30 in the morning after visiting Monument Valley (which will be in the next entry). It was around 38 degrees, windy and snowing on us but the views are spectacular. We would've liked to pull out some chairs and just gawk, but we'd be frozen in no time so we snapped some photos and raced back to the warm car.

Here's what it looks like when the weather is clear and warm.

Geologists consider this to be one of the finest examples of "entrenched meanders" in the world.

 Description

The San Juan River makes a series of tight turns - goosenecks - below this viewpoint. The river has carved a deep canyon here, dropping about 1,000 feet below the viewpoint. Geologists say this erosion has uncovered a rock record exposing some 300 million years of time. The state park offers spectacular views of the goosenecks, officially known as an entrenched meander. Over a distance of one and a half miles, the San Juan River flows for more than six miles through the twists of the entrenched meander.

Then, on the way home, we saw some wonderful geological views in the snowy mist of the morning.

You cannot get enough of Southern Utah...which is why we'll be staying in the southern part for another three weeks. Arches, Canyonlands, Newspaper Rock, Natural Bridges, Valley of the Gods, Capital Reef, Bryce Canyon, Pink Coral, Vermillion Cliffs, north rim of the Grand Canyon.

Stay tuned !!!
