Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Slept in till 9.00 this morning. Breakfast menu had changed, much to Edie's displeasure. However we had eggs and toast/Danishes to keep the hunger pangs away for the day. We caught the shuttle bus to Deira City Centre at 11.00 and found our way to the Big Bus. We got off at WAFI again and Edie saw a lovely little Amber dragon but the shop was shut and didn't open while we were there. The whole complex including the underground souk was almost deserted so we caught the next bus which took us down to Dubai Creek where we boarded a dhow for a one hour cruise down the creek. This was the area that was first settled, so the buildings are old and the streets narrow. Large ocean going dhows were loading cargo bound for Iran, India, Egypt and other near countries. Water taxis crisscrossed the river. It was nice sitting on the upper deck and getting a breeze. Today seems much more humid than yesterday. Next we explored the old Fort which is now a museum. This was very interesting. We got off at the next stop which was an old souk, but we were pestered by the sellers so much that we left. As we had been given a water taxi voucher I assumed we had to catch one from this stop to cross the river. WRONG. No one would take the voucher. Edie finally determined that we should be on a water bus, not a water taxi, so we finally crossed the river, but ended up a long way from the Gold Souk. The heat was smothering but we soldiered on through narrow streets and lanes until we stumbled upon the Spice Souk. This was very small but interesting. We then backtracked to the Gold Souk, which was a street of hundreds of SHOPS selling jewelry of all sorts but mainly gold. After more trouble locating the bus (we didn't get off at this stop) we finally headed back to Deira City Centre. It was now 6.00 and we were exhausted so any thought of catching a train back to Dubai Mall and going up the tallest building in the world, was forgotten. We had a meal there (Potbelly sandwiches) and looked around this huge complex. At 7.30 we decided to catch a taxi back to the hotel from the only dedicated taxi rank. There was a queue that extended about 100 meters and we tossed up whether to wait for the last shuttle bus at 8.25. The taxi won and surprisingly we only had to wait 15 minutes. Instead of the usual taxi we scored a luxury chauffeur driven top of the range Lexus. Edie was very impressed. As it was Thursday night and the end of their working week (Friday being their holy day), the traffic was at a crawl and of course the meter ticked over , but we were too tired to care. Back at the hotel we booked an early morning wake up call for 5am and after a shower went quickly to sleep. Dubai had proven interesting but we would think twice about returning there. Tomorrow Rome.
