Sorrento, NA, Italy
Day 9    We had little time to sort things out before Loredana took us on a walking tour of Sorrento, as tomorrow is a free day and for those not taking the tour of Naples, so we would have an idea of where to go. Back at the hotel at 7.45 just in time to sit down to dinner. Tonight we had cannelloni, pork with a mixture of potato and capsicums and tiamisu (?) for desert. Very filling. So tomorrow we will be on our own exploring this lovely city.
Day 10     We slept in till 8.00 this morning and it felt great that we weren't dominated by the clock. That's what coach travel is all about really, you accept this or you wouldn't get to see as much as you do. We had a small breakfast and set off towards the old town, an area of narrow lanes packed with shops and restaurants. Limoncella (a lemon liqueur with 34% alcohol) is made on the Amalfi coast and it is for sale everywhere, as well as all things made with lemons. We tasted some last night and yes it is strong. One glass would certainly be enough. We spent all morning finding our way through this wonderful maze of streets with new sights at every turning.
We then walked out of the town, to try to find a shop that Edie had seen from the bus yesterday morning. The sky was very dark and we decided to stop for lunch. We sat at a table on the sidewalk under a canvas awning and ordered a pizza with four different corners, so we could get a taste of different styles. Everyone said that the pizzas in Italy were not as good as at home. But we find them good. Just as our freshly baked pizza arrived the heavens opened and down came the rain. Only for about 5 minutes but it was really heavy. It refreshed the air and the cooler breeze was very welcome. While I sat and finished the pizza and drink, Edie got directions to the shop and went off to find it. It didn't have what she expected to find there, so we came back to the centre of town and did some shopping.
We returned to the hotel about 3.00 and I put all our dirty laundry into a plastic bag and went down to the laundromat a few doors away. It took about an hour as I washed and dried. It wasn't completely dry but enough to finish off in the room overnight. At 7.00 we all gathered in the foyer to go for our optional dinner. Half the group is leaving tomorrow to go home or onto other destinations. So 21 of our group plus 6 from the other bus and 10 new arrivals from England will go onto Sicily on Saturday.
The dinner was more of a tasting of a lot of foods from the Sorrento area. The first course was a plate of cheese, tomato,,salami, perchuto, cheese in crumbed balls etc.with salad then we had pizza, then pasta followed by a vanilla lemon cake and Limoncella to finish. For each table of 8 there were 2 bottles of red, 2 bottles of white and 2. bottles of water. After we had all finished quite a lot left to go back to the hotel but about 15 of us hit the dance floor for some good old rock & roll for about half an hour. It was a great finish to the evening. Tomorrow we are going for a cruise weather permitting.
