It is 6.30 in the evening and we are sitting on a concrete bench looking down onto the pebble beach at Letojanni. We have had a wonderful day in Taormina, an ancient town settled by the Greeks way back when. There is an entrance gate to go in and then another gate about 800 meters further along the road. The old Greek town is now lined by shops and restaurants just like the towns along the Amalfi coast. But the wonder of Taormina is the Greek Amphitheater perched near the end of the peninsular . From the top rows you look straight at Mt Etna. That is, if it was visible. Today it is used for concerts etc., but it's easy to imagine it as it was all those years ago. The streets are narrow and there are many nooks and crannies that were very picturesque. There was a Carnival Cruise ship in port so there was a couple of thousand more visitors to contend with. There are open spaces in the gardens and the town piazza, where the old church is. We both need a new pair of feet. There is so much walking involved and Edie developed a huge blister today even though she was wearing socks and shoes she has had for ages. I think our feet are swollen with the heat. But we are not complaining as we are having wonderful clear weather and seeing some marvelous sights.
The evening breeze is wafting over us and we can hear and see the waves breaking on the rocky shore. In the background some kids are playing and like all kids yelling to each other. There is a small pavilion nearby where many men are gathered playing cards. Well must head back to the hotel now for dinner. Tomorrow we have yet another early start and I am going to the top of Mt Etna weather permitting. Edie has decided not to catch the cable car and jeeps that take you to the top. More on that tomorrow night.
