Day 15 Syracuse to Noto to Agrigento

Noto, Sicily, Italy
What can I say - another early start to the day. This morning we went further south to the town of Noto. The old town was destroyed by an earthquake in the 1600's, so what we see now is what was rebuilt then. The style was Sicilian Baroque - very elaborate. Huge palaces, churches and theaters line the street which was built running east to west so that there was always sunshine in the street. In the Via Nicolaci there are great examples of Baroque Balconies. We had one and a half hours free time here. Half that time would have done as this style of building really does nothing for me.
Then we turned north again before turning west towards the town of Enna. Mt Etna was clearly visible today. No cloud, no sleet, just clear blue sky. At least we got to see the top even if we could not reach it. Near Enna we stopped at an Autogrille on the autostrada, which had a large selection of food, including salads, grilles and of course the usual paninis. Edie had a Magnum ice cream and she liked it so much she went back and bought a second one. This area of central Sicily is all rich agricultural land and is called the granary of Italy. From orange trees to almonds, pistachios, olives, grapes etc, as far as the eye can see from valley low to mountain high.
