Day 21. Dubrovnik , Croatia

I went up and had breakfast and then brought some toast back for Edie. We were inside the channel and it was close to 9.00 when we docked. We raced downstairs as we had to join our tour at 9.00. The Wheelhouse Bar was absolutely packed. We learnt that our tour number had already been called so we edged forward until we were given our stickers to wear. We then were all seated in the Princess Theatre and waited to be called. We were then surprised to learn that stickers "Green 7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,& 17" we're all taking the same tour. We were Green 17. That amounts to about 500 people. So it took some time to get ashore and onto the bus. It took about 15 minutes to get to the old town. It was absolutely packed with people, many like us who had to keep track of their tour leader. They were all trying to enter through the Pile Gate, the only entrance though the massive defensive walls. Most of the present buildings date from the 1700's when nearly all of the older buildings were destroyed in an earthquake. It is all stone. We visited the Franciscan Monastery and Pharmacy, the Cathedral, the Old Port and the Rectors Palace. We had 45 minutes free time before leaving at 12.15. Edie was dying for a drink but even though Croatia has just joined the European Community last July, none of the small shops would take Euros. So we found a ATM and I withdrew 100 Kuna. Edie promptly bought 2 cokes for 44 kuna. So I had withdrawn about $20. Even so the cokes were expensive. We then set off for the seaside resort of Cavtat. This is a small village on the coast and it was so nice wandering along the waterfront. This was were Edward & Mrs Simpson spent their honeymoon. At 2.00 we left to have lunch in the countryside in an old converted mill. It was terrific. Of course we were very hungary by then as Green 17 were the last to arrive. We were on an outside terrace, under cover, and beside a beautiful stream. We had a clear beef broth with crusty bread, roast lamb & veal with potatoes followed by a crunchy desert which we didn't know but which tasted very nice. Red and white wine and bottled water were provided and tea or coffee to finish off. We left at 3.45 in order to get back to the ship on time. A very enjoyable day was had by all. The weather was in the low 20's, just perfect. We sailed at 6.00, and as we weren't very hungary decided to go to the cafeteria for a snack instead of the formal dinner. We have an early start tomorrow in Corfu, Greece. Tonight we have to put our clocks forward one hour as we are entering a new time zone.
