Corfu, Greece
We are promised another warm sunny day in the mid 20's. So far the weather has been perfect and the seas calm. The sunrise is at 7.30, so it was still dark when I went up to get us some toast and jam. We were on a morning tour, so by the time we were boarding the bus, the sun was just up. We are driving to the opposite side of the Island to visit The Monastery of the Virgin Mary, a 13th century cloister. The island is vey green with large wooded areas and groves of olive, almond and cumquat trees. We learn that Corfu has the highest rainfall in Greece. We reach the north western side of the island and pass through Paleokastritsa on the way to the Monastery which is built on a cliff overlooking this village. There are 6 tour buses from our ship as well as other parties trying to enter. We hang back a bit as our tour guide never stops talking, which means we learn a lot or after a time just switch off. Finally we enter a beautiful gate and climb a few steps to the cloisters. The garden is beautiful and there are cats everywhere. The garden has grapevines, bougainvillea , roses, and dozens of pots of herbs. The smell of basil is everywhere. The cats are all small shorthair cats of every colour, from old to kittens of a few weeks. We don't mind waiting for the other groups to go first. We enter the church which is small but ornate. Not really meant for public services but for use by the Monks. It is Greek Orthodox of course. On the way out we visit a small museum and a room containing an olive press. It was great. The bus took us down to Paleokastritsa Village where we had some free time. It's on a very narrow piece of land, with a deep sea beach for scuba diving on one side and a sandy sheltered beach for swimming on the other. There were quite a few small hotels as this is obviously a very popular spot with tourists. Edie manages to telephone her sister Norma to check on her family. We haven't been in touch since leaving Sicily. We drive back to Corfu town by a different route but the scenery is the same. As in Dubrovinic there is an old town area which is where we are taken. There are no high protective walls here but it does have and old fort at one end and a new fort at the other end. In between there is an old city filled with churches and narrow streets. We stay with the guide for a while, but then strike out on our own as I want to call home too. This accomplished, we see a McDonalds and go there to hook up with their WiFi. I try a Greek burger, which uses flat bread instead of a bun. It was very good, but we cannot say the same for the WiFi. I think everyone in the world is hooked up to McDonalds - it is so slow. We leave after getting one email through. We wander around town and into a market area where there are dozens of small shops. It is all very colourful and repetitious. About 2.30 we reach the area near the new fort where we can catch a bus back to the port. We find a nice restaurant called Fresco where they have free WiFi. We sit down and order a beer for me, because it's about the cheapest drink you can buy and a pistasio milk shake for Edie.It was great sitting there, getting all our emails through, relaxing having a leisurely drink and having access to a toilet. All too soon it was time to catch the bus back to the ship. I tried to take a photo of the ship from the dock, but it is just too long for me to get it all in. It was very nice sailing away as the sun shone directly on the old town. It was another great day and exceeded my expectations. A quiet night is planned with an early dinner and a movie.
