Day 26. Athens. Greece

Athens, Greece
We had a restless night. Edie tells me this morning that she hardly slept at all. As well as the obvious, she is worried about not being able to send and receive emails. I have thought about this too, and I said we should just open up another account with Gmail and worry about the one they stopped when we get home. About 800 passengers disembarked this morning and we believe about 1000 will be joining us this afternoon. Our tour today takes us to the Acropolis. We are docked in Piraeus about 20 minutes from the centre of Athens. We are driven into Athens around the coast which is very pretty, but we are on the wrong side of the coach to see it properly. Our guide today is a very short lady with short cropped blonde hair who speaks very good English. We arrive at the large rock, on top of which sits the Acropolis. There are a lot of steps to negotiate and the ground is very uneven. We head upwards with hundreds of others. Nearing the entrance gate our guide takes us aside in the shade (I forgot to mention, the temperature is going to be 30 degrees today) and goes through her spiel which for once is short and to the point. We go over to a wall and look down - there is the Roman amphitheatre which has reconstructed seating as they hold many concerts here. The front wall however is authentic. We then move forward again and enter through an old gateway and there we are looking at the back of the Parthenon -covered in scaffolding. We move around this outstanding building and I can't help thinking that there is less of it now than there was in 1969 when I was here last. Considering that it was blown up in the past, I guess we are lucky to see it at all. We also see the Erecthelon with its porch of "Maidens", the Greek theatre, and in the distance the remaining columns of the largest and grandest temple of its time - The Temple of Zeus. We are given some free time, but we have already taken our photos and we decide to start down. We stop for an iced fruit juice and then found ourselves going down a road which is much easier than the pathway. Back on the bus we drive for about 5 minutes then we are off again to take a photo of the 1896 Olympic Stadium. We spend another half an hour driving around the sights but not actually taking in any of the names. We do see in the distance the solders guarding the war memorial, but as they change the guard every hour on the hour we couldn't wait 45 minutes for the next one to happen. At 11.45 we stopped near the entrance to the Plaka, the old district nestled at the foot of the Acropolis. We are given 2 hours free time here. Like in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul , this has changed from authentic Greek brassware and fabrics etc to modern T shirts and leather sandals. We sat down at one of the dozens of outside restaurants and ordered a drink each and a burger with chips. Well......... The meat was about 6x4 inches on a flatbread, with tomatoes and chips. Enormous. But they had WiFi and we managed to set up another account and send off an email advising of the new contact address. We bought a couple of things. I got some "worry beads" which Edie thought was a great idea. We were back at the dock by 3.00 and stopped in the terminal to use the WiFi again. Edie's niece had responded so we new it was working. The condition of Edie's sister has not changed. We spent a quiet afternoon on our balcony. We decided to have dinner in the cafeteria . At 7.00 they had a delayed telecast of the AFL Grand Final on the big screen. We watched for about 15 minutes until it stopped so decided to give it a miss as we already knew the result. Tomorrow it's Santorini, a place I really want to see so am looking forward to it with great anticipation.
