Day 27 Santorini. Greek Island

Thera, Greece
Santorini was on top of my bucket list, so what am I going to replace it with now. It was another beautiful day and we set off early from the ship - 7.15. The ship anchored offshore in the sunken crater of a volcano. Santorini and a couple of other islands are the crater walls. In fact this volcano is on the same fault line as the Italian volcanos of Etna, Vesuvius & Stromboli. It is believed that the next eruption will cut Santorini in half. Anyway we started by taking a Tender from the ship for a couple of miles to an area where the buses were waiting. They zig zagged up the craters side until we reached the top and then made there way to a Winery. We all had a taste of the wine even though it was 8.00 in the morning. Because the humidity was about 95%, there was a damp cloud like mist hanging over this part of the island and in the half an hour we were there it moved away then closed in again and then finally cleared. Our next top was the town of Oia (pronounced Eeewah). This is the town you see mostly on advertising and pictures of the island. The blue domed churches are well known. We spent about 2 hours there wandering around the narrow cobbled streets, from one end to the other. It was beautiful. On the way there we passed a large walled area and was told it was owned by Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt and they were there now,as they spend every September in Santorini. Next we drove, by a different route, to Fira, the capital city. This is where our tour ended. It was about 11.30 so we had all afternoon to wander around. There were plenty of shops and restaurants, the latter seemingly hanging off the cliff. We actually bought some Tshirts. Eventually we reached the Catholic Church, next to which is the cable car station to take us down to water level. We went to a nearby restaurant and had a drink and used their WiFi to catch up with emails. The view was outstanding. We still had some time to spare so we decided to see the Church. On the way we saw a Dr. Fish, where you sit with your feet in a tank of 250 little fish and they eat the rough skin off your feet. It was €10 for 15 minutes. It felt really good , though it tickled sometimes. Our feet felt wonderful afterwards. When we got back the queue for the cable car stretched about 100 meters, so we decided to join it and go back to the ship. The queue moved quickly enough and before I knew it, we were lined up waiting for it to appear from below. There were 5 bubbles each holding 6 people. Just as well I was sitting with my back to the view, because it was very steep and after I had taken a couple of pictures, my mind remembered my fear of heights and I was just about to worry, when someone said "Here we are". We took a tender back to the ship and relaxed before dressing for dinner. This is the third time in 9 days that we have actually had a proper sit down dinner. Well 4 more ports (Rhodes, Kusadasi, Crete, and Naples) and 1 sea day before we reach Rome and start our journey home.
