Day 4. Cradle Mountain to Strachan

Strahan, Tasmania, Australia
We had some fun in the spa last night before turning off the heater and settling in for a good nights sleep. It looked very dull when I woke at 7am. We had thought that we may go back into the park this morning to do a couple of the very short walks . But when we went outside we realised that it was raining, a very fine drizzle. No fun in the rain as it gets very slippery. So we set off for Strachan, driving though cloud with nothing visible beyond the road, So glad we saw what we had yesterday. As we dropped down we emerged from the clouds but the rain persisted. We swapped drivers at Lake Rosebery as you have to concentrate hard as the roads are so windy. One lane each way with limited places to pull over so the very "speedy" Tasmanians start backing up behind.
We had a lunch break at Zeehan, a former mining super town which was at one time the third largest city in Tasmania. Today it's tiny but some of the grand buildings survive. We paid $25 to go through the West Coast Heritage Centre. Of course there was a lot about mining and Edie was very interested in the large display of crystals & minerals. But it also gave us access to a couple of the old buildings, notably the historic Gaiety Theatre and the police station and court house.
The rain was heavier as we drove on to Strachan about 30 minutes away. It all looked very nice and we called into the Heritage Cruise office to pay for our cruise tomorrow.. We are staying at Risby Cove right on the water. This is the second time we have had to carry our bags up to the first floor and thankfully the last. We have a large lounge/kitchen area, a separate bedroom sleeping 3 and a bigger than necessary bathroom. We were here by 3.00 and just had a relaxing afternoon. Hope the weather clears some tomorrow as it would be so nice to see the Gordon River in the sunshine.
