The biggest wave we will ever surf!

Hyden, Western Australia, Australia
Once back in the car, we decided to begin our journey to Hyden to see Wave Rock. Leaving early also meant not driving at dusk so we would avoid the suicidal wildlife! It was a 4 hour journey but it felt a lot longer as the roads were so empty and almost dead straight so you could see for miles and they seemed to go on forever! We probably passed at most 10 cars during the whole journey which was a strange feeling so we were glad to finally pull into the campsite we were staying at for the evening, albeit a little apprehensively as we were sleeping in the luxury of the car!!! This decision had come about as we hadn't booked anywhere to stay as we hadn't planned on needing anywhere as we were just going to pass by. Now we needed somewhere it turned out there are only 2 places to stay at Wave Rock: the hotel or the campsite (shows you how big of a town this place is!) The hotel was $140 a night and there were no cabins on the campsite available so we were stuck with the car as that would cost $30 and we weren't prepared to pay $140 for a room.

After spending 4 hours driving you don't exactly look forward to going to bed when your bed is the same car you've been sat in all day! So we parked up behind some trees for shelter from the morning sun and went for showers . Once we had freshened up, we walked across the road to look at the cafe and the tourist information centre, to stretch our legs more than anything. We now had literally nothing to do and it was only 7:30pm. So whilst standing outside the car we chatted, ate cheese slice & crisp sandwiches and waited for dark and the temperature to drop as it was very hot still. It cooled off around 10 so we set up and attempted sleep as we were both tired. This proved easier said than done as it looked far more comfy than it actually was, especially for Matt with him being so big. We both sort of tossed and turned with our eye masks on and kind of got a little sleep but not much at all it seemed. It even got pretty cold so we ended up sleeping in our hoodies with towels as duvets!

After a not particularly comfortable night's sleep, we were both surprised to feel pretty wide awake! The downfall of sleeping in a car is that as soon as the sun comes up you are awake so Matt was up and about by 6am! I, on the other hand, had the sense to keep my eye mask on so I had a lay in albeit only until about 7:30!! With nothing to pack up, we were ready to go and explore the sights in no time and so made our way over to the main attraction, Wave Rock .

Despite the things I'd read, I was still sceptical that this rock was going to look anything like a wave so I was pleasantly surprised when we approached it and it really did look like a 15 metre high wave crashing over you! This is caused by water having worn away the bottom of the rock but leaving the top and then rainwater reacting with the lichen on the top of the rock causing a striped effect to run down it. There was hardly anyone about as it was so early in the morning so we were able to get lots of lovely photos and some funny ones of us pretending to surf the wave!
After this, we followed a short trail to a group of boulders called The Breakers, these were formed after a large rock face developed cracks and then rainwater seeped in between these joints, slowly eroding them and creating a curved edge on each block. Eventually they broke away from each other and fell to the ground as round boulders.

The final sight on this trip was Hippo's Yawn, which is located halfway round a walking loop. Its only 1.4km away but by now it was very hot and there were lots of flies so we quickly got on with it. This was formed in a similar way to The Breakers, except the water only rounded off the top section of the rock, whilst in the centre a 'tafone' has formed which gives the rock it's opening, or the hippo it's mouth! As much as these were quite impressive I wouldn't recommend anyone going out their way to see them but it's an interesting stop if you're going past.

Once back in the car, we made a quick stop at the gift shop to check out the cafe for breakfast. We changed our minds as the menu wasn't great and it was quite expensive so we went to have cheese slice and crisp sandwiches again and then popped to the service station for petrol before starting our 4 hour journey back to Perth!
