Farewell Cambodia!

Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Our last night's sleep in Sihanoukville was a very restless one: perhaps because of the crazy storm and torrential rain going on outside or perhaps because we knew we had to be up early to finish packing, have breakfast and get to the bus station. Whatever the reason, we were both awake before the alarms went off and were quickly up getting ourselves sorted. It was still pouring with rain so we weren't looking forward to our tuk tuk ride to the station! Nevertheless, we said our farewells to the lovely staff at our bungalows and, after just managing to cram everything on, we climbed in and set off!

It was sad to finally leave our quiet little paradise but as the weather had turned for the worse, there really wouldn't have been any point in staying longer! We had been so lucky to have such good weather! Although we did feel quite sorry for our tuk tuk driver as he bumped his way down the huge pot holed road, which by now was filling with water.

After our journey to Phnom Penh from Battambang, we had vowed never to get a VIP bus again but we were left with no choice as that's the only one that would drop us at the airport rather than taking us all the way into the city. So, we packed our bags onto the tiny minibus and sat rather uncomfortably for the next 4 hours as we sped along back to the capital!

Thankfully, the journey passed fairly quickly and, other than an ongoing battle between Matt & the Frenchman next to him (Matt was hot, he was cold, so they kept adjusting the air con vent back and forth to suit them!), the journey was pretty uneventful! This driver was slightly more sensible than the previous one, but only slightly! There was still a few scary moments as we sat in the same lane as the oncoming traffic but we arrived at the airport without any incidents! Even so, the bigger and cheaper buses are probably still a better option, unless you're in a rush of course!

I was very surprised to discover that Cambodia is the first airport we have been to during our travels which has a facility which seems obvious to me at an airport: a post office! Throughout our travels, I have said to Matt on numerous occasions that you'd think there would be one at every airport, then if you have excess baggage you would have the option of posting some somewhere! As it turned out, we didn't have any excess baggage to send home but we did need stamps for our final postcards!

We passed the time by having drinks at Costa and food at Burger King before finally heading off to check in. We were very surprised to discover the weight of our bags has actually dropped: mine was 18.9kg and Matt's was 18.5kg! This means we can both afford to have a bit of a shopping spree in Kuala Lumpur ('afford' in terms of weight allowance but sadly not financially!!)

We made our way through to the departure lounge where it suddenly dawned on me that this would be the last flight we would take together on this trip so, of course, there were a few tears! Matt had gone to the toilets so didn't notice my tears but luckily the English girl sitting next to me starting chatting to me which took my mind off those sad thoughts and I was soon feeling happier again!

Our flight ended up being delayed by half an hour but, after a last minute gate change, we boarded and were off! Our final flight together was taking us back to the first place we visited on this trip: Kuala Lumpur. Somehow that felt right and we were looking forward to revisiting some of the first places we had seen almost 11 months ago!
