I took a flight north to David (DAH VEED) where i was going to take a local bus to Boquette, about 45 minutes away but the taxi driver i took from the airport going to the bus station convinced me i would be much more comfortable if he just drove me to Boquete for $30 (versus $2.50 Panama uses US dollars) i negotiated $25 so I took him up on it ... by the way this is all with broken English, nonexistant Spanish and a lot of hand gestures.
i originally wanted to take the cheap 8 hour bus from Panama C to David for $16 to see the countryside but roads were blockaded due to aboriginal protests over mining on their land
. Boquette is located by the Volcan Baru (volcano) which people hike on and it is a great bird watching place as well as hiking, rafting etc. and is A LOT COOLER. it is also famous for its gardens and flowers and the quetzel bird and old gringos from US who have built gated communities and ride around in the golf carts inside the gates and play golf and look ridiculous I hear. Prices low too, a full meal, pollo, arroz and verdura or ensalada for about 2$ and beer was cheap too! it is close to Costa Rica border. I met a couple from England who were worried about their house in Devon, the pipes burst as it had frozen so they were, with the help of friends back in England, dealing with the insurance company and trying to rescue precious books etc. i took three Spanishs lessons and learned a few importa t words like 'disculpe' for excuse me and 'lo siento' for i'm sorry..
After 4 nights in Boquette on the Friday at 4 p.m. i headed back to David on a local bus, a school bus, which was packed with sometimes 3 to a seat
. All seats were taken when i got on, so i told the driver´s helper who promptly shoved two people over in a seat so I perch on the edge. and there was standing room only as more people piled on and the bus stopped enroute on the road and picked people up at different ´paradas´even though you wouldn´t think they could `pack one more person on. The funniest thing was the carpenter and his wife that were picked up and he was carrying a two foot saw in his hand along with his tool kit and no one´batted an eye´..... except for me I guess. I overnighted in David - very hot there! and then flew back to Panama City for my flight to Montevideo. I had stored some clothes that i didn´t need (there are weight restrictions on Air Panama flights to certain places) at Hotel Acapulco, so I had to explain to taxi driver that i just needed to get to the hotel and then grab my equipaje (luggage) and have him wait so he could take me to the international airport. Fortunately he was one of the few taxi drivers who actually spoke English so he gave me a price (I think $20) for the whole trip to and fro and it worked out fine. But roads were blocked as a Iron Man TriAthalon was on that day so it took quite a while to reach the hotel (Marathons and now Triathalon have been dogging me throughout my travels) so I repacked in the backseat while he drove me to airport as i had to get everything into my suitcase again.had a saw in his hand,
