We arrived
at the Damai Beach Resort on Saturday and have been here for six days. The resort is nestled between the jagged
Mount Santuborn, (if you look closely, you can see the face of a person
looking up to the sky) and the South China Sea.
I immediately loved the
simplicity of the resort, unlike so many, over the top, ostentatious resorts
found elsewhere. The décor is very
modest and the buildings and single chalets
that house the 242 rooms seem to
blend right into the surroundings.
After we
arrived and got settled in our room, that has a gorgeous view of the sea and
the coastline, we went exploring to see what was offered at the resort and the
surrounding area.
Our room was in a
building in the hilltop section with a fabulous pool just a short walk from the
room.
There’s another larger pool on
the lobby level that is located right on the ocean
and the China Sea is just a few steps from the pool.
There’s a very modest and reasonably priced
restaurant in the resort and, having eaten there several times, I can say that
the food is quite good.
The resort
is nowhere near a town or village but there is a food court and some small
shops at the Damai Center, just outside the grounds of the resort that we could
walk to in about 10 minutes.
It was late
afternoon when we stumbled across the Sarawak Cultural Village, right across
the street from the Damai Center. The
grounds were open but the demonstrations and cultural performance of songs
dances and entertainment had already closed.
It was so beautiful and peaceful that we spent over an hour strolling
through the grounds with plans to return the next day to see all the
activities.
