Jorge Chavez International Airport, Callao, Peru
Have you ever seen a cockroach? Well, it might surprise you, but I haven’t....
Despite having travelled to obscure corners of the world, enjoyed home stays in remote villages; tucked in for the night in the worst of hostels and I’m even quite sure I stayed in a brothel one night but never have I come across a cockroach...until last night.
Having only been asleep for an hour or so, nature called...must have been all the water I drank on the plane! (Wink! Wink!) Navigating the room with the hazed intoxication of someone who hasn’t slept in 19 hours, I found my way into the dimly lit bathroom.
Quietly doing my business with closed eyes in an effort to keep the light out and the sandman in, I peeped open just enough to find the toilet paper. That’s when I saw it! Creeping toward me with slow steadiness and stealth of an army soldier advancing on enemy lines, my eyes shot open! OMG! What to do?!!
This thing was MASSIVE! I’m not kidding! Picture a baby mouse with a helmet and armour; same thing, only mean and angry. I was tempted to slam my foot on it but 1. ) I was barefoot (ewe!) and 2.) based on its size, I feared a bloodbath! Grabbing a towel I swung at it with all my might, flinging the little armoured soldier against the wall where it hit with the sound of a Pepsi can bring savagely crushed!
Dazed and confused I crawled back into bed, desperately summoning sleep, while fighting the vision of a cockroach platoon invading the bed as I slept. Nuts to you Air Canada!
The good news…In stark contrast to my midnight cockroach horror, the next day was filled with the simple pleasures of enjoying resort life for a few hours before our unexpected but lovely side trip came to an end. Rich coffee and fresh pastry for breakfast followed by a lazy walk in the midmorning heat and finally a sandwich and beer on a beachfront deck, we soon found ourself at the airport and 5 hours later, in Lima, Peru!
Hello South America! The Healey/Pitcher contingent are here! Whoot! Whoot!

Happy you made it to Peru Dina and Paul. My experience with a cockroach was in Thailand, they love the shower and they sure move fast! Love the layout of this blog - I look forward to following you.

Haha. Remember my cockroach story from Brazil. Same. Having a pee and in walks the creature.... about the same as you described. I slammed the bathroom door to keep it out, but it just left one leg behind in the doorframe and marched in anyway. While I screamed, afraid it would attack and crawl up my leg, jeff chased it around the bathroom.
