WHY WE TRAVEL

Toronto, Ontario, Canada
People are always asking us: "So what's your next big trip?" They have come to expect that we are always just returning from somewhere or going off to another. And yes, it's true that we have done a lot of traveling in this new millennium, and that some of these trips have been somewhat out of the ordinary.

Why do we do it, you might wonder? If you know us well, the answer is simple and will not surprise you . We travel because we can. We're at a sweet spot in our lives where we have the time and the means to travel. We are relatively healthy and unencumbered by any major responsibilities keeping us in Toronto. Retirement has a lot to do with it, too. We know not how long this window will remain open for us, as the events of the past year have demonstrated.

And, oh yes, there are other factors which are equally important. We love the adventure of the road, the unknowns of travel, the uncertainty, the exposure to new situations and new environments. We revel in going places that we haven't been before, but still find pleasure in returning to places that we know well and enjoy. It's equal measures of risk and reward that we relish.

Thus far, we've been lucky, and we know it. We've never been put in life-threatening circumstances, never been exposed to violence, or theft, or evil people. We've seen some health issues along the way, but none were unmanageable . Occasionally, they've slowed us down, but never put a halt to our travels. Once again I repeat, we've been very lucky.Travel is the best form of escapism that we know. There is no better feeling than putting the key in the door, and saying goodbye to everything you are leaving behind. With the hope that you've seen to all the matters which might arise in your absence, you have to put complete faith in your planning and preparation for dealing with any eventuality that could arise while you're away. Part of that is having people you can trust to handle the unexpected. For us, that's Tammy. She's always been there as a backup in looking after our personal affairs while we're off seeing the world. Sometimes, it's not easy for her, since she has her own life to attend to. We are so appreciative for all she has done for us. I've saved the absolutely greatest reason to explain our constant travel. The pure and simple truth is that we have both found the absolutely ideal traveling companion. Almost five decades of travel have made that imminently clear, We balance each other so well in terms of temperament, travel acumen, good sense, shared interests, flexibility and willingness to compromise. We rarely disagree, which makes our journeys so pleasant, and positive, and wonderful. In fact, you might say that it also defines our journey through life.

No one can foretell the future, but we can only hope and pray that we shall be able to continue our travels for many, many years to come.

Hi Micki,
Thanks for the nice message on the blog. Yes, you were my inspiration for blogging, and I'll be eternally grateful. This will be my 11th trip blog. I'm so happy that I've done them cause they bring back great memories, and also keep family and friends up to date on where we are. THis trip is taking us to Iceland, Morocco and then a cruise across the Atlantic. (Hope the hurricanes are over by the end of the month, since we'll also be spending a few weeks in Florida afterwards.)
Looking forward to the next Jan Birthday Party.

You travel because your KARMAS are good and you are adventurous. It is time that you turned this art of traveling into a business to help folks like us. I will be your first customer.
Cheers and happy travels.

David and Bonnie!-We are so happy that you are having ANOTHER adventure ahead of you! Of course you COULD have come to WESTERN Canada-and sampled weather cooler than Iceland. (Never mind-just teasing you!) Your on- going "exploits"" are always fascinating to follow.
