REFLECTIONS FROM THE REFLECTION

Madeira, Madeira Islands, Portugal
We have been on this ship for 5 days now, with 10 more to come. Being the newest of the Celebrity fleet, it is loaded with all the bells and whistles you could want. It's a beautiful ship, too, with art everywhere, some of which is outlandish or high-tech. For instance, a framed painting which is actually a slow ever-changing video. The ship's atrium features a full-size living tree suspended in mid-air high overhead. The top deck has a large grassy lawn for picnics, games, etc. There's so much more I could describe which sets this ship apart from others we've sailed, but I won't subject you to it. Suffice it to say that we're so thoroughly enjoying it.
After the pace of our Japanese and Indian travels, we were ready for the ease and comforts a cruise offers, plus we did need a way to get back to N . America. This cruise fit the bill perfectly, at an unbeatable price. Trans-Atlantic cruises are so reasonable, and can be less than what you'd pay for airfare alone. So, for 15 days, we're being spoiled on what has thus far been smooth sailing and pleasant weather. To further sweeten the experience, our fellow passengers are a diverse and interesting mix, most being friendly and all appearing to be enjoying themselves. We are meeting some really nice people, are sitting at a fun table at dinner, and have already made friendships that we hope will continue afterwards. Anyone who has cruised will know how easy and enjoyable that can be.
Yesterday, we landed at our first and only European port, Madeira, a gorgeous volcanic island off the coast of Portugal. Eight of us hired a van/driver (Flauvio) who took us to see the highlights, which in this case, were not buildings, but natural beauty. For example, we were taken to the highest cliff in Europe (second highest in the world) overlooking the ocean 580 meters (over 1700 feet) below, where we could stand on a dizzying glass-floored overhang . A few of our group couldn't bring themselves to do it. Another cool attraction that day was a ride in a go-cart-like buggy which careened down a steep street being 'driven' by 2 men wearing straw hats and gondolier-like outfits. I know that it sounds strange, but it actually was a lot of fun with a hint of danger, and a must-do kind of a thing.

Back on the ship afterwards, we heard a lecture on astronomy, met new friends for a drink, had a lavish dinner, attended a performance by a singer who had been Jean Valjean in Les Mis on Broadway, won a bottle of champagne in an art quiz (Bonnie), and heard some jazz. Just a typical night on a cruise ship!! Can you see why we're addicted to cruising?
We now have 5 sea days before we start hitting a bunch of Caribbean ports. Every day, we must turn our clocks back an hour until we're back on EST, a nice way to avoid jet lag.

Bonnie and I have already traveled more than three-quarters around the globe, and now feel like we're in the home stretch of this wonderful adventure. We're feeling great and doing well. Finally, we want to thank you for joining us. Your comments and emails have been much appreciated. It's so good to hear from back home and to read your responses to the blog. You (and the cows of India) are in our thoughts. We love you all.

Hi Bonnie and David,
So good to hear from you again, and this time much closer to home. The cruise ship sounds amazing, do keep enjoying. I think resetting your clock one hour is so civilized as you sail back to NA. It certainly beats jet lag. Halloween is this Friday and I'm giving out treats at Francine's whilst they accompany the boys around the neighbourhood. Looking forward to your safe return.

Hi Moishe. Even though I have not commented, I felt I was part of your trip without spending a dime. Hopefully someday Juli and I will visit some of the places you were at. I hope you made notes of all the kosher restaurants. I look forward to your return and our equisite visit to BP.

Your buddy
Chaim
