Long touring day round Lake Louise

Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada
Had a good nights sleep bed lovely and comfortable let Richard sleep in while I did some more of the blog having fun remembering the photos I took and giving them a title. Showered and dressed for the day 8.30am already went downstairs for breakfast lucky to get the last table. No buffet here like at the Old Entrance B n B you are waited on coffee and orange juice first but you can get your own fresh fruit, cereals and toast. The pineapple and rockmelon was so juicy. The omelette was in a wrap with bacon, mini tomato on side with lettuce and brie (very Swiss). Feel strange being waited on for breakfast but I think for three days we could get used to it. Noticed there were a lot of European guests either German, Austrian or Swiss as Peter spent a lot of time talking to them in their native tongue.

With breakfast over I approached Peter (we haven't seen his wife yet must be lost in the kitchen) for the ice coolers and asked if we could store our milk and meat in the small fridge in the dining Room as there was a notice saying we could as long as you put your name on your containers. Got the coolers raced upstairs rearranged our esky and now have peace of mind having the milk and meat in the little fridge didn't want them going off.

Peter gave us directions to the Shopping Centre where Saveway was for us to get more bread, cold meat and veggies. Popped into the Canadian Tire shop for Richard to find a large Buzz Ball lure to take back home to show Nick but there wasn't any there only small ones. Pity we don't have this shop in Australian as I mentioned before they sell everything for vehicles plus do services, all camping, fishing goods, anything to do with gardening. Four stores in one your one shop store must try and take a video or photo inside. Saw an Esso station so filled the Pontiac $121.9 here but the pump didn't like our Debit Card had to use Richard's MasterCard which was a pity as the Aussie dollar has dropped to 90 cents.

Our room is turning into a mini kitchen now had to use the other end of their spoon (Richard borrowed in case he was hungry and wanted cereals) to butter the bread for sandwiches. Richard brought up our kettle to make our coffees and we are right for the road.

In casual conversation with Peter when we were leaving for Lake Louise he said we should go there early in the morning or after 3pm when all the tourist buses had gone. Gave me a map and said to go to Moraine Lake and Takakkaw Falls before Lake Louise. Jill found Moraine Lake so we headed off there first.

Back out onto Hwy 1 to Lake Louise an hours drive away would have been great to get one night accommodation there but all booked out plus it was very expensive. While travelling on the highway we saw two dead elk or deer very sad sight must have been killed last night. The animals didn't use the cross over tunnel ahead of us. Saw a camera crew interviewing a Ranger on top of the tunnel doing an interview. Lots of cars and buses going to Lake and Moraine Lake which is 14kms on the left turn of Lake Louise. The cars were parked on the side of the narrow road to the lake we were lucky mum must have been watching over us today for parking as Richard managed to get a spot close to the river. A lovely couple pointed to a vacate spot for us.

The lake was a beautiful Baltic Blue we saw lots of people standing on top of a large rock formation looking over the lake taking photos. Didn't fancy climbing up the side like some others when I noticed a bridge so we ventured over there and followed the trail to the top of the rocks. What a glorious view from there. I told Richard this is what Lake Louise will look like even better. Time was still early for Lake Louise as it was round lunch time so we drove to Takakkaw Falls. Big mistake on my part when Richard found out we had to leave Lake Louise area to go further on to Yoho National Park to see the falls probably another 50kms should have gone here first. There was a lot of roadworks going on to improved the highways but this also made driving a bit dangerous.  Jill couldn't find the falls so had to rely on signs none on the Banff side when we stopped at the Fields Information Centre. The lady there apologised and said we had to go back 3.4kms to the Kicking Horse Pass sign and turn there. What a nightmare of a journey Richard wasn't in a very good mood. The road was very narrow with a very dangerous hairpin turn where you had to wait your turn to go around.    Missed pull-over bays to look at views and take photos going up and coming back as Richard was either concentrating to much on the road, in another world or driving a little fast and wouldn't stop if a car was behind.

Finally reached the Takakkaw Falls had lunch and coffee before tackling the trail to the falls. Richard stayed back as he had seen enough falls while Iwalked along the river over the foot bridge and followed the trail to Takakkaw Falls (Cree language meaning "magnificant"). It is truly magnificant you just marvel at the sight and sound of the thundering third tallest waterfall in Canada I just went to the base the trail walks take too long plus I didn't want to get wet. I took this photo of Mt Ogden as the formation and colouring is different from all the other mountains.

There is only one one in there so back down the mountain and terrible hairpin turns )I couldn
t believe it whenwe turned the last hairpin corner a tour bus was going up. Back down to Kicking Horse Pass where you get a better look at the Spiral Tunnels a revolutionized railway engineering of cutting through the the side of the mountains plus building tunnels where the rocks have fallen. Couldn't get a photo as ther was no vwhere to pull over.

The drive back to Lake Louise didn't take that long plus seeing it was near 3pm the crowds were thinning out. Mum was looking after us again and we found a parking spot close to the lake. Well I am sorry to say but Moraine Lake looked a lot more beautiful. When I came in 1987 the front of the Fairmont Lake Louise Hotel was lawn all the way down to the lake. Now there is garden, paths and rock walls. Had a walk around the lake front and hotel but didn't venture further as time was marching on and it is an hours drive back to Canmore.

Had an early dinner out in the garden then dessert inside (chocolates and pistachio nuts). Let Peter know we had a lovely day sightseeing and got the ice coolers from the kitchen freezer and redid the esky. Put more veggies in the little Dining Room fridge.

Tried catching up with the blog but got an unexpected Skype call from Phyllis, she was worried I had been off-line for a few days. Told her I was trying to find accommodations in Banff which was difficult seeing there was a big cycling event on in Banff starting 24th August. Too tired only caught up with entering our daily expenses before retiring.
